What the sh*t did I just read? A troll girl pulls herself inside out? Is that the gist of the book? David Sedaris may have had a few too many cocktails before scribbling out this thing。
Leslie,
a gorgeous monstrosity that emphasizes how “Beauty [really] is in the eye of the beholder” and riffs on other possibly dumb things we say to children like: your face could get stuck that way, and you’re beautiful on the inside (at the most useless times)。 I love the horror。 I love that Falconer is more than up for the task of complimenting Sedaris。What a joy…。Caldecott, anyone?!
Ashley Ewert,
Just strange。

But her very favorite thing in all the world was to make faces, terrible, horrible, terrifying faces ! Her mama did tell her to be careful, because one day, she may get stuck。 Of course, Anna did not listen。 Of course that day arrived。 She was stuck。 Totally stuck。 Maybe forever stuck with the most unimaginable face ! Persecuted, rejected, she had no other option than leaving, hiding in solitude… until the happy day where Anna found deep down inside herself how to be true to herself again。I really love this picture book ! David Sedaris wrote a book for children that will also be enjoyed (if not more !) by adults。 With Ian Falconer, he explores the meaning of feeling different。 It is a great and unexpected read and the art is very unique ! 。。。more
Beth,
Worth the hype! Cant wait to use it as a read aloud。
Bayneeta,
A children's picture book。 Black and white illustrations with a bit of green, and a tiny bit of red。 Seems to me this would be quite a hit with little kids。 A bit of a gross out factor adds to its "charm。"With fewer than 300 words, I'm puzzled that Audible suggested I might like to own this。 But what's a picture book without pictures? So I immediately went to my library to borrow it。 Just out today; they finished processing it while I waited。 A children's picture book。 Black and white illustrations with a bit of green, and a tiny bit of red。 Seems to me this would be quite a hit with little kids。 A bit of a gross out factor adds to its "charm。"With fewer than 300 words, I'm puzzled that Audible suggested I might like to own this。 But what's a picture book without pictures? A cute and quirky read for kids! It brings to light the question of, is beauty truly on the inside?

An endearing misfit for the ages! Young kiddos and their grownups alike will chortle in chorus at the cleverly unexpected ending for our one-of-a-kind heroine here! Thank you, Mr。 Sedaris。 。 。and may illustrator Ian Falconer rest in peace for leaving us to long marvel at such expressive and whimsical characters!

Can she find a way to stop looking like an ugly human and regain her gorgeous monstrosity of a face? The dynamic duo of nationally acclaimed comedian David Sedaris and renowned children's book author Ian Falconer comes together to ponder the perpetually relevant question: is true beauty really on the inside?Pretty Ugly is a new look at several old adages。 Our young hero finds out that when you are making silly, funny, or scary faces it really can stick that way。 Even us parents thought it was made up and just an attempt to make the madness stop! I love the illustrations, and how poor Anna tries so hard to stop looking so darn cute。 I also love her literal interpretation that beauty is on the inside。 This is an all around fun book, with splendid illustrations, and I hope this will become a favorite for many, and that no one tries Anna's beauty secrets。 。。。more

Pretty Ugly by David Sedaris is an amusing picture book about a monster who is making faces and gets stuck as an adorable rosy cheeked girl。 She struggles to find a way to get rid of her new hideous face and regain the beautiful monstrous complexion everyone loves。 This story's humor is sure to be a hit with younger readers but it also helps readers ponder what they value as beautiful and where beauty can truly be found。Thank you @Netgalley and @DavidSedaris for the ARC。 Pretty Ugly by David Sedaris is an amusing picture book about a monster who is making faces and gets stuck as an adorable rosy cheeked girl。 She struggles to find a way to get rid of her new hideous face and regain the beautiful monstrous complexion everyone loves。 This story's humor is sure to be a hit with younger readers but it also helps readers ponder what they value as beautiful and where beauty can truly be found。Thank you @Netgalley and @DavidSedaris for the ARC。 。。。more
Melki,
This was fun, but to be honest, I kind of expected more from the dream team pairing of Sedaris and Falconer 。 。 。 at least a few more pages anyway。 It's a cute tale of a little girl who makes a face, and of course, just like mother always warned - it sticks that way。 Of course, there's a twist, and, of course there's a swell gross-out ending that kids will love, and grownups will worry may cause permanent damage to their child's psyche。Many thanks to NetGalley and TOON Books for the chuckles。 This was fun, but to be honest, I kind of expected more from the dream team pairing of Sedaris and Falconer 。 。 。 at least a few more pages anyway。 It's a cute tale of a little girl who makes a face, and of course, just like mother always warned - it sticks that way。 Of course, there's a twist, and, of course there's a swell gross-out ending that kids will love, and grownups will worry may cause permanent damage to their child's psyche。Many thanks to NetGalley and TOON Books for the chuckles。 。。。more
Ronald Roseborough,
A rather unusual book with a lesson to be learned。 It just goes to show that beauty is in the stye of the beholder。
Rachel,
This was both hilarious and the perfect middle school level of cringe that kids will love。 David Sedaris is pretty hit or miss。 But this picture book is sure to grab some kids!
Noelle,
Pretty Ugly is a silly story with an important message -- your beauty is found on the inside and these standards are always changing。 Who even gets to decide what's beautiful or not anyway?Honestly, the inside-out version of Anna Van Ogre is actually creepy and I'm sure there are many kids who will love it。 Pretty Ugly is a silly story with an important message -- your beauty is found on the inside and these standards are always changing。 Who even gets to decide what's beautiful or not anyway?Honestly, the inside-out version of Anna Van Ogre is actually creepy and I'm sure there are many kids who will love it。 。。。more
Deborah Zeman,
Very cute Graphic Novel for young readers。 Moral of the story: beauty comes from the inside, regardless of what you look like inside and out。 This story reminded me of a reverse Shrek。 And of course the warning, be careful or your face will stay that way。。。I still use that statement when I see kids making ugly faces at others。 The illustrations were great and kids will laugh out loud at the gruesomeness of the drawings。
Beth,
Not entirely sure what message this is giving to children。
Connie,
a very cute and entertaining picture book~ with an unexpected and fun ending! even makes you think a little bit, which I love。 highly recommend。
Donna Merritt,
The story begins with lines from Longfellow: "When she was good。。。" as Anna Van Ogre does things considered pleasant by ogre standards, e。g。, stomping on flowers。 Her bad behavior is limited to one thing: making "terrible" faces, like that of a bunny。 Since it's a story about beauty in the eye of the beholder, kind of along Shrek lines, it felt jarring to move from her actions to her appearance。 I love that her family sticks by her no matter what, but the way she "resolves" the issue is a bit we The story begins with lines from Longfellow: "When she was good。。。" as Anna Van Ogre does things considered pleasant by ogre standards, e。g。, stomping on flowers。 Her bad behavior is limited to one thing: making "terrible" faces, like that of a bunny。 Since it's a story about beauty in the eye of the beholder, kind of along Shrek lines, it felt jarring to move from her actions to her appearance。 I love that her family sticks by her no matter what, but the way she "resolves" the issue is a bit weird。 Then again, it's David Sedaris。 Adults may appreciate the ending (not this adult, but others)。 Not quite sure how it will be received by kids as they're even more discerning than grown-ups, but perhaps they'll simply accept it as a believe-in-your-true-self book。 Or maybe just laugh, which could be the point。The illustrations of Ian Falconer (RIP) are wonderful。 Simple lines。 Only one scene with a background。 Mostly black/white/gray with a little light green and bright red surrounding our main character。 I adored the art and wish Falconer were here to give us more beyond this and his Olivia books。#AstraBooks #promoCopy #schoolLibrarian 。。。more

I was able to read an advanced copy of this gross but wonderful story。 It is about a girl who learns that as long as you love what is inside you, you will find a way to persevere。 Through humor this book will really offer a chance to lead meaningful discussions。 I can't wait to add this to my classroom library and read it to my students。 I was able to read an advanced copy of this gross but wonderful story。 It is about a girl who learns that as long as you love what is inside you, you will find a way to persevere。 Through humor this book will really offer a chance to lead meaningful discussions。 I can't wait to add this to my classroom library and read it to my students。 。。。more

Anna Van Ogre does all the things good little ogres do。 She stomps on flowers, and talks with her mouth full, but her favorite thing to do is make scary faces (which for an ogre are cute faces like a bunny)。 Her mother hates these faces and warns her to be careful or she might get stuck that way。 One day, she makes the scariest face of them all - that of a little human girl - and it gets stuck。 Now she's pretty ugly。 Pretty Ugly is a great concept。 Anna lives in a community of ogres and everyone Anna Van Ogre does all the things good little ogres do。 She stomps on flowers, and talks with her mouth full, but her favorite thing to do is make scary faces (which for an ogre are cute faces like a bunny)。 Her mother hates these faces and warns her to be careful or she might get stuck that way。 One day, she makes the scariest face of them all - that of a little human girl - and it gets stuck。 Now she's pretty ugly。 Pretty Ugly is a great concept。 Anna lives in a community of ogres and everyone, even the doctor is horrified by her new ugly face。 However, her solution is pretty gruesome。 I found the final illustrations of Anna rather disturbing - I'm sure they were meant to be funny, but I don't want to share this book with my granddaughter。 Take a look before you buy。 。。。more
